Battling the Mist
Depression is a thorny subject from at least two different angles. First, when you experience it, it seems to defy being moved by any biblical encouragement. Might as well battle the mist, said Spurgeon, as do battle with this faceless enemy. Second, how do we even think about it biblically? It is hard to locate in the Bible, at least at first glance. Sure, we could take a look at Saul’s emotional swings, but that gives us a sketchy interpretive grid. I know I am looking forward to taking a stab at both of these matters at the conference, and I’d be interested in any thoughts that can give us a running start.
Battling Together. In January 2009, we offered a four-week Bible study on depression at our church, and we re-discovered and re-experienced an important truth. Any approach to depression that is Biblical, will be a group project. God wants us to expand our worlds - to get to know certain Christians better, and to get to know more Christians. What helped the people in our group was the presence in their lives of brothers and sisters who were available for this serious discussion of their own walks with God and their own struggles with dark thoughts. We needed the fellowship of other people to battle and overcome depression. I believe this is always the case when struggling against depression. It is not right to go it alone. Fellowship is part of a Biblical cure. Jesus has rescued us by, in part, giving us fellow warriors in our common battle. Not Rambo, but dirty dozen. That’s how we must fight this one.
